Meet Unathi - Dance Teacher

Unathi, a dance teacher from Khayelitsha, found his passion for movement and expression through the Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme that transformed his life. Introduced to the world of dance by a friend in Grade 7, he remained dedicated to the art form throughout his school years until matric. What began as a hobby soon became the foundation for his confidence, discipline, and a lifelong journey in the performing arts.

For Unathi, the most rewarding aspect of his experience was being taught to be a go-getter, to step out of his comfort zone, and to engage with people in the broader dance community. As a very introverted child, the MOD Programme built his confidence, exposing him to various opportunities, including attending dance camps and participating in major productions where he honed his skills under the guidance of different teachers with diverse techniques. These experiences expanded his worldview and allowed him to understand the complexities of stage performance, from choreography to backstage production.

One of the most moving moments in his journey was performing at the Baxter Theatre and Artscape through the Annual MOD Programme productions. These productions offered him an in-depth comprehension of the stage, the crew, and translating everyone’s effortless into an unforgettable show. By the time he reached university, he already had a strong foundation in these spaces, allowing him to navigate theoretical concepts with ease and apply them practically. Witnessing the technical aspects of productions firsthand gave him valuable insights that prepared him any the final performance, instilling in him with well-rounded approach to dance and drama.

Beyond the artistry, the programme instilled key life skills, namely time management, discipline, and dedication. Unathi learned that success requires consistency and perseverance. Being early, prepared, and driven were crucial lessons that shaped his approach to both dance and life. Through exposure to three different schools, he explored multiple dance styles, transitioning between contemporary and traditional African dance. His teachers and MOD coaches played a vital role in fostering this growth, trusting their students and envisioning bright futures for them. Their belief in the students was validated in 2015 when Unathi had the opportunity to travel to Sweden to perform. A monumental moment that reaffirmed the impact of the programme on his life.

Today, Unathi encourages young people to take advantage of programmes such as the MOD Programme, emphasising that they offer far more than just artistic development. They are pathways to personal growth, exposing individuals to the arts, sports, and a multitude of skills that extend beyond the stage and field. He understands the socio-economic challenges that many in his community face, but he believes that these programmes serve as an escape from crime and negative influences. Creating safer spaces for the youth to explore their potential. His own siblings have also been positively impacted by the programme, proving that its reach extends far beyond the individual.

Through his journey, Unathi transformed from a shy child, so uncertain of himself and his future, into a confident performer and leader. Being tasked with creating and showcasing work in front of large audiences became a powerful tool for building self-esteem. The programme offered the chance to make mistakes and learn from them. Fostering resilience, self-awareness, and personal growth; it provided a holistic approach to education, offering guidance to those who felt lost and empowering them to take charge of their futures.

Unathi pursued his studies at the University of Cape Town and is currently working towards his Honours in Education at Stellenbosch University. He firmly believes in the power of community and the importance of group development. For him, leadership is about taking initiative, contributing in small yet meaningful ways, and providing a culture of support and collaboration. Challenges, he believes, are opportunities for growth. Strategic problem-solving has become second nature to him. His ability to work with varied perspectives has strengthened his critical thinking and creative approach to teaching.

As a teacher, Unathi applies the skills he gained from the MOD Programme in his daily interactions. The 21st-century skills of time management, patience, kindness, and self-discipline form the backbone of his teaching philosophy. He understands that youth leadership is about stepping up, taking space, and leading with humility. His love for the arts has been the driving force behind his journey, and he remains committed to inspiring others. For him, consistency is key, never missing a moment and being always eager to learn. Embracing drama, dance and music, not just as a passion, but as a lifestyle built on dreams made reality.
