Minister Ricardo Mackenzie highlights the importance of National Archives Awareness Week
The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, joins the rest of the country in marking National Archives Awareness Week from today until 9 May 2025.
Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has underscored the significance of this week in preserving South Africa’s history and promoting a culture of transparency, accountability, and access to information.
“Archives are more than just documents—they are the living memory of our communities. They preserve our struggles, our progress, and our shared identity. As we step further into the digital age, it is critical that we invest in good records management and embrace the transformation of archives into more accessible and inclusive spaces,” said Minister Mackenzie.
This year’s theme highlights the relevance of archives in the digital era and encourages public engagement with records and heritage resources. The Western Cape Archives and Records Service will host a range of activities during the week, including talks, workshops, and guided tours.
The public is encouraged to explore the programme and learn more about the value of archives by visiting the Western Cape Government website: https://www.westerncape.gov.za/cas/service/western-cape-archives.
