The new Overhex Modular Library officially opens its doors
The official opening of the new Overhex Modular Library on 11 September 2025 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Overhex community in the Breede Valley Municipality.
This milestone project was made possible through a collaboration between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Breede Valley Municipality, and the Overhex Community Hall, under the leadership of Frans Pietersen. The goal is to provide the community with modern, accessible library facilities that meet today’s educational and informational needs.
The journey began in 2014 with a humble setup: two mobile trolleys stocked with library materials and a single computer; all housed in a small room next to the community hall.
The newly completed modular library offers a wide selection of reading materials, as well as computers with internet access. It serves not only learners from Overhex and Aan De Doorns Primary School, but also the broader farming community in the surrounding areas.
In her address at the opening, Councillor Nami Nel stated: “This library proves what can be achieved when we refuse to give up. May it be a beacon of knowledge and hope for every learner who walks through its doors.”
Library Assistant Chriconia Verwey moved the audience as she introduced three dedicated community members who have supported her since the arrival of the very first books. Among them were Charles Fritz, Lenique Martiens, and Ayse-Lee Pieterse – who continue to face life with strength and resilience despite living without lower limbs.
Filled with emotion, Verwey shared: “These helpers remind us that a library is about more than just books – it’s about the people who selflessly give of themselves so that others can learn.”
Project Manager, Ethney Links further encouraged learners to fully embrace the opportunities the library offers, saying it is a place “where dreams can take flight.”
The event was made even more memorable by a heartfelt poem delivered by Faith Martiens, head girl of Overhex Primary, and the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Councillor Nel, library manager, Christine Gerber and Ethney Links from DCAS.
