Nomination of Western Cape representative to serve on the National Arts Council
In terms of the National Arts Council Act, 1997 (Act 56 of 1997), as amended, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport invites members of the arts fraternity and the public to nominate suitably qualified persons for consideration as the Western Cape Provincial Representative on the National Arts Council (NAC). The nomination process is conducted in accordance with section 4(2) of the Act, which requires a public and transparent process.
Eligibility Requirements
Nominees must:
• Be South African citizens;
• Be permanent residents of the Western Cape Province;
• Possess special knowledge or experience in the arts; and
• Comply with the eligibility requirements prescribed in the National Arts Council Act, 1997 (Act 56 of 1997).
• Nominees should also demonstrate the ability to represent the interests and diversity of the Western Cape arts and culture sector.
Assessment Criteria
Eligible nominees will be assessed on:
• Knowledge and experience in the arts sector;
• Contribution to arts and cultural development;
• Knowledge of cultural policy and the mandate of the National Arts Council;
• Leadership and governance experience; and
• Strategic planning, financial oversight and organisational management experience.
Submission of Nominations
Anyone wishing to nominate persons to serve as Western Cape representative at the National Arts Council should submit the following documentation:
• A nomination form, containing full names, and all contact details of the nominee;
• A declaration and acceptance form signed by the nominee, in which he or she accepts the nomination;
• Recently updated Curriculum Vitae of the nominees, including three (3) contactable references; and
• Certified copies of the nominee's Identity Documents as well as educational qualifications.
No nomination will be considered unless all the above documents are included. Correspondence will only be limited to shortlisted nominees only. The Provincial Minister notes the current litigation process before the courts and this call is issued subject to the outcome of the pending court proceedings.
Nominations should reach the Head of Department: Cultural Affairs and Sport by 29 July 2026, 16:00. Please submit your nomination to Themba.Mchunu@westerncape.gov.za or hand deliver documents in a sealed envelope for the attention of the Head: Cultural Affairs and Sport at Protea Assurance Building, 134 Longmarket Street, Green Market Square, Cape Town. The envelope must be dropped inside the box marked NAC NOMINATIONS placed at the reception Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00.
