Minister Marais congratulates LEAP team on their operational successes
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has congratulated the 117-member Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) team based in Khayelitsha for their contribution in fighting violent crime in the area and reducing the area’s homicide rate. Minister Marais thanked the members of LEAP and the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their dedication and service to the community before accompanying LEAP officers on patrol in Khayelitsha during a joint operation with the SAPS.
From September 2024 - when the LEAP double-up deployment was implemented - to 31 March 2025, Khayelitsha recorded a 32.5% decrease in murders in comparison with the previous reporting period.
LEAP officers also conducted 411 joint operations with the SAPS and executed 55 tracing operations.
LEAP officers in Khayelitsha also made 870 arrests between September 2024 to 31 March 2025, up from the 418 arrests in the previous reporting period.
These included:
- 630 arrests for the possession of drugs.
- 9 arrests for dealing in drugs.
- 9 people taken into custody for the possession of unlicensed firearms.
Minister Marais said,” These statistics are the result of the hard work and commitment shown by our LEAP officers, not just in Khayelitsha, but across areas where they are on patrol with their SAPS counterparts. Data and evidence shows that this integrated approach to tackling crime works and we will continue to build and bolster crime-fighting and prevention partnerships.”
