Minister Marais welcomes swift arrest after Kraaifontein double murder and strongly condemns acts of vigilantism
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has welcomed the arrest of a 49-year-old suspect in connection with horrific murders that shook the community of Kraaifontein.
Between Monday 2025-09-08 and Tuesday 2025-09-09, six (6) people were shot and killed in Kraaifontein in three separate shooting incidents. Two females aged 19 and 25 were shot and fatally wounded and a third 24-year-old victim was shot and wounded in Wallacedene. In another incident, two females in their twenties were shot and fatally wounded in Taleman Street, Wallacedene. Two other victims were also shot and killed in Verster Street, Eikendal. The suspect was taken into custody in connection with the murder of the two women.
Minister Marais has extended her gratitude to the members of the community who bravely came forward with vital information that assisted in identifying this suspect. Your courage and willingness to speak up played a crucial role in this breakthrough and demonstrates the power of community and police collaboration.”
This arrest underscores the urgent need for even closer cooperation between communities and law enforcement in the ongoing fight against violent crime. Criminals must know that they have no place left to hide when residents stand united against lawlessness.
Minister Marais also strongly condemned the brutal acts of vigilantism that occurred in Kraaifontein last night, where three men were killed. “Such acts of lawlessness have no place in our society and only serve to undermine the rule of law and the pursuit of justice. While communities are understandably frustrated with crime, taking the law into one’s own hands is never the answer. I urge residents to refrain from any form of mob justice and to instead work hand-in-hand with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that those involved in criminal activities are arrested and face the full might of the law through proper legal processes,” Minister Marais added.
“I urge all citizens to continue supporting crime-fighting efforts by reporting any suspicious or criminal activity. You can do so anonymously by calling the South African Police Service on 0800 10111 or downloading and using the MySAPS mobile application. You can also report tip-offs to the City of Cape Town’s crime tip-off line on 0800 110077. Every tip-off is a step closer to safer, more resilient communities,” Minister Marais concluded.
