Notice of Public Participation Process Workshops: Review of the 3rd Generation Western Cape Air Quality Management Plan

NOTICE OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS WORKSHOPS:

REVIEW OF THE 3RD GENERATION WESTERN CAPE AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLAN (Click here to access poster)

The Western Cape Government, through the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP), both implements systems and provides an oversight role in the province with respect to air quality management. In line with the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (No. 39 of 2004), the province adopted its first Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) in 2010, followed by the second in 2016 and the third in 2021. The DEA&DP is now preparing to review the 3rd Generation AQMP.

Following 5 years of its implementation, the DEA&DP is embarking on a review of the 3rd Generation Western Cape AQMP to:

• assess progress made in air quality management in the province;
• establish whether the identified goals and targets have been effectively implemented;
• establish whether the goals and targets were still valid in terms of new developments and economic growth in the province; and
• identify potential air quality risks and interventions that can be translated into new goals and objectives, where required.

Members of the public are invited to participate in the review of the Western Cape AQMP. The following phases form part of the review process:

Phase 1: a series of regional Public Participation Process Workshops, which will contribute towards the development of a Status Quo Report on Air Quality Management.

Phase 2: a series of regional Public Participation Process Workshops, which will contribute towards the development of the 4th Generation Western Cape AQMP. The public will be invited to comment on the draft 4th Generation Western Cape AQMP.
