Focus on your studies with a Masakh’iSizwe bursary
Achieving a qualification in engineering is a challenging endeavour. Besides the intense curriculum, a student’s financial and non-financial obligations to the higher education institution (HEI) where he or she is studying can be a distraction.
The Department of Infrastructure gives an exciting opportunity to young people interested in careers in the built sector to focus on obtaining the intended qualification without worrying about fees, accommodation, transport, the cost of textbooks, tutors, or mentorship.
Zena Stain received the bursary in her second year of studies at Stellenbosch University towards a qualification in Mechatronic Engineering.
Now an engineer with professional registration through the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), Zena is grateful that the Masakh’iSizwe bursary allowed her to focus on her studies by taking care of the rest of her concerns.
“In my second year, it gave me the opportunity by providing for accommodation and my books, and my meals. It gave me the space to only focus on studying and getting the degree”, said Zena. “If you are struggling with a module, they (DOI) offer you the opportunity to get a tutor to ensure that you are in a space to be your best and help you when you are struggling.”
After graduating, bursars are required to work at the Department should their services be needed. As part of the bursary programme, employed graduates take part in the Professional Development Programme to prepare for professional registration.
“Professional registration opened more doors for me as more companies require that the engineer be registered with ECSA”, said Zena. “I would like to thank the DOI for assisting me with a bursary, getting my degree, and then providing me with a job and the space to grow professionally, leading up to my registration.”
