Driver arrested after transporting scholars in trailer

The Western Cape Government has commended law enforcement officers for taking swift action after a viral video exposed a minibus transporting scholars in a trailer in Wellington earlier this week. Following an investigation, the driver responsible was arrested for reckless and negligent driving, and endangering the lives of young passengers.

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku emphasised that such reckless behavior will not be tolerated, "It is deeply concerning that any driver would think it is acceptable to transport children in such unsafe conditions. Our law enforcement officers acted decisively, and we commend them for ensuring accountability. Scholar transport must always comply with safety regulations to protect the most vulnerable road users - our children."

Operators transporting learners are required to comply with the provisions of the National Land Transport Act, including being in possession of a valid operating license. Their vehicles must be roadworthy, and they must have the necessary permits to transport learners.

The Western Cape Government calls on parents and caregivers to support our efforts to protect school children on our roads. This includes taking every practical step to check that private operators transporting their children always use safe, roadworthy and reliable vehicles, and that drivers have legal authorisation to transport learners.

The Western Cape Government remains committed to enforcing road safety laws and protecting all road users, especially young learners, who are using this form of transport to travel to and from school. A safe environment for our learners both in school, and on their way to and from school, is our priority.
