Freight Focus: Keeping the Western Cape Moving

Freight is the lifeblood of the Western Cape’s economy.
Every product on a shelf, every export that leaves our ports, every load of construction material delivered, they all rely on a freight system working quietly behind the scenes.
From agriculture and manufacturing to mining and retail, freight supports the industries that create jobs and grow our economy. It connects our farms to factories, our businesses to markets, and our people to opportunities, across the country and around the world.
But freight doesn’t move on its own. It’s made possible by:
- Efficient road, rail and port networks
- Smart planning, technology and data
- Strong collaboration between government and industry
- Dedicated people and innovative projects that keep it all running
What is Freight Focus?
Freight Focus is the Western Cape Mobility Department’s campaign to shine a light on the systems, infrastructure, people, and policies that power the movement of goods in our province.
It’s about making the invisible visible, and showing how freight shapes our economy, our daily lives, and our future.
In Freight Focus, we’ll explore key themes including:
- Collaboration & support for the freight industry
- Road freight infrastructure & safety
- Rail revitalisation & port efficiency
- Technology, skills & the future of freight
Each section will highlight the Western Cape Mobility Department’s initiatives, from improving truck compliance and revitalising rail, to launching a dedicated Ports Project Management Unit.
Why it Matters
Freight is more than just trucks and trains — it’s the engine behind economic growth, trade, and service delivery. Understanding and supporting freight means supporting opportunity, safety, and sustainability for all who live and work in the Western Cape.
