Chartered Accountants Academy
The Western Cape Treasury Chartered Accountants Academy (CAA) provides an avenue for prospective chartered accountants to receive accredited training inside public sector – they receive their training through Provincial Treasury and not through traditional audit firms.
The CAA programme does not only reinforce academic education, but help develop business acumen, professional and ethical values.
Our aim is to attract and retain the best finance and accounting professionals within the Western Cape Government. We offer graduates the opportunity and support to be the best they can be.
Trainees will gain valuable public sector experience; intensive knowledge of the public sector financial systems and processes such as the PFMA and MFMA, developing chartered accountants that are public sector specialists. The CAA offers a three or four year professional training programme that has been structured in a manner that grants the trainees exposure in key areas of management, decision-making and control. Experience is gained through rotation to the various divisions of provincial and local government.
We encourage individuals to think out of the box and take the lead on new ideas.
Individuals who have at least completed their SAICA accredited degree are welcome to apply for the 2025 traineeship intake.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I Join the CAA while working Full-time?
At this stage, the CAA programme is an intensive full-time internship programme, with a commitment to a 3 or 4 year contract only. Western Cape Government employees will need to resign from their current positions if they are accepted to the academy.
How long is the CAA programme and what happens thereafter?
The CAA programme runs for 3 to 4 years. At the end of this comprehensive learning programme, successful trainees would have completed the work related aspect of qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, which is certified by SAICA.
What is the salary offering?
CAA trainees are offered a market related salary.
Where would I be based during the programme?
Trainees will be based at Treasury’s offices in Cape Town and will be rotated to any of the departments and municipalities, or our training partners within the Western Cape to give trainees exposure to other areas.
Who can apply for CAA programme?
Candidates in their final year of completing the Certificate in Theory of Accounting (CTA, Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA) or B.Com Accounting Honours
Candidates with a SAICA accredited undergraduate degree
Would I qualify for leave?
Trainees qualify for annual leave, sick leave and study leave.
