Western Cape Government Essay Writing Competition

The Western Cape Provincial Treasury, in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), facilitates an annual Essay Writing Competition for Grade 11 learners in the Western Cape.

Learners complete a research-based essay on a prescribed economic topic, focusing on current issues affecting the South African and global economy. Participating schools submit top performing essays for consideration. Shortlisted learners are invited to present their work as part of the adjudication process.

Top performing learners are recognised at an awards ceremony, and a maximum number of 12 learners are awarded bursaries to pursue full time studies in commerce related fields after matric. The bursary covers tuition and includes a textbook allowance. 

This initiative aims to promote interest in economics, finance, and related careers, while contributing to skills development and youth empowerment in the province.
