Western Cape DSD, Tile Africa, and Primedia Cares unite for the vulnerable

Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt, has continued his call to businesses and residents to get involved in making a meaningful impact by supporting registered NPOs.

Tile Africa and Primedia Cares have heeded the call by taking hands with the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD).

This past week, as we concluded 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, these entities stepped up to boost services at St. Anne’s Homes, a DSD-funded shelter for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) by donating items like beds, pedestals, and other furniture.

“We have been asking businesses to get involved with our department to see how they can assist the many incredible social service organisations across our province that need that extra bit of support. The department funds over 1000 organisations, but due to limited resources, we need the support of the private sector and communities. Here we had Primedia Cares asking how they can support NPOs in need with the donations that Tile Africa had provided, and we could help connect them to credible, registered organisations. This is exactly what the Cape Care Fund is for, to connect donors to vetted organisations that support vulnerable residents,” said Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt.

Head of Primedia Cares, Trish Taylor said, “Media plays a critical role in social impact projects and as a leading media business, Primedia continues to drive a collective impact agenda and most especially in our efforts to combat GBV.”

Tile Africa Paarden Eiland’s Carol Koopman said, “Thank you for allowing us to be part of this partnership. We always try to put up our hand and reach out to assist. We also hope to one day see GBV being something of the past. Thank you to DSD and St. Anne’s for what you’re doing for the community.”

For St. Anne’s – that currently provides support and accommodation to 15 women and 13 children – these donations have brought comfort and hope.

Oslynn Macounie, St. Anne’s Homes director, said, “Our President has recently classified GBV as a national disaster, however it’s not declarations that changes lives, it’s action. And today I want to thank Primedia Cares, Tile Africa, and Minister Londt for the action that they’ve taken to help us at St. Anne’s Homes to change lives.”

St. Anne’s Homes wasn’t the only organization that benefited from Tile Africa’s generosity of donations worth R78 000. Includid Homes, a residential facility for 70 adults with intellectual and physical disabilities also received much-needed furniture and other household items.

Includid Homes general manager Johann Opperman said, “We cannot say thank you enough. These items came at just the right time. The beds alone will mean so much for our support workers who will now be able to wake up in fresh new beds, ready to take care of our residents.”
