- Apply early. Don’t wait until the last day.
- Parents should apply to a minimum of three schools, including the school closest to their residence.
What is the admission age for Grade R and 1?
- Compulsory school-going age (Grade 1) is seven years in the year that the child is in Grade 1.
- Admission age to Grade R is six years in the year that the child is in Grade R.

Can schools charge a registration fee before accepting learner?
No. Schools may not charge a fee before accepting a learner.
How do parents apply?
Where do parents go if they do not find a place?
The outcomes of on-time admissions applications for Grade R, 1 and 8 in 2027 is not finalized.
At the point when outcomes are first released, a substantial number of learners will have received offers from more than one school. For example, last year, over 40 000 learners had multiple successful outcomes at various schools and were initially “double parked” on the system.
This means that while a parent may initially see that their child has not been successful at a particular school, many places are in fact still temporarily occupied by learners holding multiple offers.
As soon as parents begin confirming their choice of offers, this frees up additional places which can then be offered to others.
Parents have until 15 June 2026 to confirm their choices, but we do appeal to them to do so sooner rather than later.
What this means for parents:
- The admissions process does not end with the initial release of results.
- There is significant movement in placements over the days and weeks that follow.
- Many learners who are initially unsuccessful do receive placement shortly afterwards.
- Schools will contact parents directly as spaces become available.
Parents should not to be discouraged if their child is not placed immediately.
Important actions for parents:
- If you have received multiple offers, please accept one school as soon as possible. This helps free up places for other learners.
- If your child has not yet been placed, remain engaged with the schools you applied to and ensure your contact details are correct.
- Be assured that the admission process is still active, and many placements will still be finalised.
Our appeal to parents:
We ask for your patience and understanding during this phase. The department is closely monitoring the process and remains committed to ensuring that every learner is placed.
We also remind parents that schools determine the outcome of admissions applications based on their admissions policies. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) does not determine the outcome of applications to a school.

I did not get a place at ANY school
The initial release of results can cause concern for parents if their child has not yet received an offer when the initial outcomes become available.
We understand how disappointing this can be, and we would like to help families better understand the process.
Thousands of learners received multiple successful applications at schools. This means that while a parent may initially see that their child has not been successful at a particular school, many places are in fact still temporarily occupied by learners holding multiple offers.
As soon as parents begin confirming their choice of offers, this frees up additional places which can then be offered to others.

Please also note that schools determine the outcome of admissions applications based on their admissions policies. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) does not determine the outcome of applications to a school.
I did not get a place at the school of my choice. (A learner has at least 1 successful option, but the first choice of the parent is unsuccessful)
You may to write a letter/email to enquire from, ask for clarity or motivate for the application to be reconsidered to the SGB of the school.
Kindly note that the school makes the final decision whether the application is successful or not. The WCED is not involved in this decision-making process. The online application is subject to the school exercising and applying their own admission policy.
Unfortunately, the WCED cannot assist with schools of choice. It is therefore recommended that you contact the school(s) and request more information on why your application was not accepted and request to be considered if any vacancies become available.
I did not get a place at ANY school or school of choice
Parents must now confirm their final choice of school for 2027. Once parents have confirmed and declined, places will open at schools. Many learners have been accepted to more than one school – meaning that places will become available.
Parents have until 15 June to confirm their final choice. After that, schools will contact parents that were not accepted to offer places. We understand that this is stressful, but the WCED will assist you with an option if you did not get a place at any school. However please note that this will only happen in the third term after schools have filled the available places.
I didn’t get a place for Grade R - LEARNER IS YOUNGER THAN 6 YEARS OLD….
It is advisable to stay in touch with the school and request that the learner be reconsidered for admission should places become available. Thousands of learners receive successful applications to multiple schools, so more places will become available once these parents have confirmed their choice.
I didn’t get a place for Grade R
It is advisable to stay in touch with the school and request that the learner be placed on a waiting list.
However, please note that due to demand for places, it is advisable that you look at other suitable options such as ECD centres, as all schools do not offer Gr R.
I have been accepted into one or more schools – what do I do next?
You can confirm your acceptance by logging into your profile, click on Track Application and click on the “Confirm” button.
Once you have confirmed your application online – you are then required to provide certified hard copy documents to the school that you have selected, within 7 days of acceptance.
We appeal to parents that have multiple successful applications to confirm your acceptance as soon as possible. By doing so, you can free up the spaces you are occupying at other schools sooner, allowing other learners to get placed.
Why does it say that my application is pending?
Kindly provide the date when you applied on the system - admissionsHO@westerncape.gov.za
Also provide the following information to assist:
- Parent Name and Surname:
- Parent ID number:
- Learner Name and Surname:
- Learner ID number:
- Learner CEMIS Reference Number:
We will follow up with the school once we get the information and get back to you.
What does it mean by the “School is oversubscribed”?
Oversubscribed means that the school received more applications than they can accommodate for that grade. However, some learners that have been successful at a particular school may have been successful at other schools which will free up some spaces once they have confirmed.
You may write a letter/email to enquire from, ask for clarity or motivate for the application to be reconsidered to the SGB of the school. It is advisable to stay in touch with the school and ensure your contact details remain the same as when you applied, as some places may still open at the school.
If you do not get a place at ANY school by the third term, the WCED will assist you with an option.
However, please note that this will only happen at the end of August, once all the places at schools have been filled and we can confirm which schools still have places available.
I have a successful place. What is the process going forward from here?
Parents must now confirm acceptance of the placements at schools between 28 May and 15 June 2026. In the case that the learner is accepted at more than one school and you, have not indicated your final decision and confirmed by 15 June 2026, the first school where the application was successful, as ranked by you, will be activated automatically on 15 June 2026. All other successful applications will then be removed to resolve learners blocking places at schools.
After 15 June 2026, parents/guardians will only have three days to accept a place if you are offered one at a school.
What do I do if I have not yet applied? The system is now closed?
You may go the nearest District office where they will assist you with your application.
Appeals to the Minister
Appeals to the Minister for on-time Grade R,1 and 8 applications will be open online from 1-14 August 2026.
Please note, over 46 000 learners have received multiple offers at schools. This means that more than 64 000 spaces will open soon, as parents confirm schools.
This is only the start of the placement process and more opportunities for placement are coming!
